WebHybodontiformes was named by Patterson (1966). It was considered monophyletic by Soto et al. (2012) and Pinheiro et al. (2013). It was reranked as the order Hybodontiformes by Cahuzac et al. (2007), Underwood and Cumbaa (2010), Long (2011), Soto et al. (2012) and Nelson et al. (2016).
