WebInternational Roughness Index (IRI) The International Roughness Index (IRI) is used by highway professionals throughout the world as a standard to quantify road surface roughness. A continuous profile along the road is measured and analyzed to summarize qualities of pavement surface deviations that impact vehicle suspension movement. WebIRI is linearly proportional to roughness. If all of the elevation values in a measured profile are in-creased by some percentage, then the IRI increases by exactly the same percentage. An IRI of 0.0 means the profile is perfectly flat. A value of 180 in/mi is often used by state DOT’s as a trigger for resurfacing highways.
