WebSep 23, 2024 · The Queensland government’s proposal of a new plan to increase fully protected marine sanctuaries from 4% to 12.8% in the Great Sandy Marine Park is a good step towards ensuring the area’s unique wildlife is better protected, the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) says. Webwaters of Hervey Bay and the Great Sandy Strait form the Great Sandy region. The region covers about 840 000 ha of South East Queensland. The Great Sandy region has many exceptional natural attributes (recognised nationally and internationally), including the Great Sandy Marine Park, the Fraser Island World Heritage Area and significant wetlands.
