The day before, a ship had delivered a fresh load of molasses, which was warmed to reduce its viscosity for transfer. At 12:30 pm, witnesses reported that they felt the ground shake and heard a roar. Several factors might have contributed to the disaster. The first factor is that the tank may have leaked from the very first day that it was filled in 1915.
